stay in edinburgh, day 1 should be spent exploring the city especially the castle or arthurs seat, day 2 you could take the train up to aberdeen as this route has plenty of beautiful coastal scenery and the must see forth bridge. day 3 you could visit north berwick and climb up north berwick law and enjoy the superb view over the north sea and firth of forth, the evening could be spent back in edinburgh as you only need 4 hours for north berwick and its hill. day 4 you could take the train to glasgow and enjoy this fascinating scottish city and your final day could be spent just wandering around edinburgh.

Why don't you start of in the big city, Glasgow then get a bus or train to Edinburgh, then take a bus up to Inverness, Loch Ness. Glasgow is only 40 mins from Edinburgh. Lots to see and do in all of the places, beautiful scenery.

Five days? 1. Edinburgh (you can take the commuter train to see the sights of Glasgow - a day trip). 2. If you can afford it, flying up to inverness, hiring a car there and then driving south via Skye and Oban - leaving the car at you departure airport - is a good idea. 3. Otherwise think about a micro-bus tour of the highlands. See www. Visit Scotland. As usual local travel groups are suggesting that you go to less attractive areas and places. When is hype just plain lies? Check out any recommendations on http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/ and Tripadvisor.

The Highlands and the Isle of Skye are very beautiful. Scotland is a relatively small country but there are quite long distances between the different areas. There are rail services provided by Scotrail www.scotrail.co.uk You can also buy a Freedom of Scotland pass for the trains, buses and ferries to the islands See link on the Scotrail site. See also www.visitscotland.com The beauty of Scotland is in the natural landscape rather than the cities Fort William is a good town to visit if you want to visit Ben Nevis Britain's highest mountain The rail journey from Glasgow Queen Street Station to Fort William is very scenic. Dumfries and Galloway in south west Scotland, often overlooked by visitors, is very beautiful too

I live in Glasgow and it is a wonderful city. The riverside museum is good for engineering type things-it's a transport museum. If you travel by bus approx. 1 hour to Ayr there is a nice seaside port with stunning views to Arran especially if you can be bothered to climb the hill (some days you can even see Ireland). For a more cultural expierence Edinburgh is the place. The castle shows Scotland's history and it is amazing arichtecture. Stirling castle is also a good place to see if you have time but Edinburgh is grander with its many cannons and views over the city. Fort William is a nice town with lovely views of the mountains and nice cottages and greenery, but for real natural beauty the Orkney Islands are the best place for you. Although it is a rather long trip up the scenery makes up for it, beautiful sea views from cosy B & B's but rather poor weather. And there are nice rocky headlands which are great for picnics in the summer. Hope this helps and that you enjoy your trip!:)
