What is it like to work for a cruise ship?

  • I have recently become very interested in working on a cruise ship, hopefully as a bartender or bar back. I just would like to know what life is like on the ship? What is there to do ...show more

Hi there, ship life is pretty much what you make it... if you go with a negative attitude, that's what it'll be. If your attitude is positive, if you don't mind working 10 hours a day, eating crap food and you're not pressed to make a fortune, it could be one of the most exciting and fun times in your life. Life on a cruise ship is so dynamic that often times, in 24 hours on a ship you can experience things your friends back home on land wouldn't experience in a month. If you like to socialize, you'll love it... it's very intense! Everything happens very quickly as you never know when you might be taken off the ship and sent to another one. Therefore, If you wanna get to know someone or do something... the only time to do it is right there and right then! Actually, once you start working on ships it becomes contagious as your normal life on land starts looking too slow. It really depends on a ship/cruise line what itinerary you'll have... some crew stay on the same ship for 6-8 months doing the same itinerary over and over again, while the others get transferred from ship to ship. In 7 years on crew ships I had a chance to see: the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Alaska, Panama canal, New England/Canada, Mediterranean and Scandinavia. And on top of that...2 dry docks, 2 set-ups and countless overnights which is when you really have a lot more time to explore the ports of call. If you are from the US, you really have more chance getting a job on a ship if you look into some other departments... stage/production staff, videographers, art auctioneers... (not sure what your qualifications are). Bar staff probably gets a couple of hours a day in port a couple of times a week... And that's if you feel like getting off after a whole night party in the crew bar the night before :)) Good Luck, Med Chick

Pay is very low, hours are very long, time off the ship is limited and you would do the same itinerary repeatedly. Living quarters are also very cramped. It's not at all as glamorous as you might think. And Americans are not likely to be hired for positions other than entertainment staff. US labor laws do not apply and not many Americans would be willing to work under such conditions. There is one ship that sails only around Hawaii [NCL Pride] that has only American staff. It is roundly criticized, however, for the poor level of service.
