Should you get cruise insurance?

What sort of insurance to get when working on a cruise ship?

  • Hey guys, About to start a 6 month gig on a cruise ship and wondering what sort of insurance to look at to cover my DSLR camera and laptop? The company covers up to $3000 for ...show more

  • Answer:

Definitely consult an insurance professional. Would travel insurance cover you? It tends to be based on the cost of your trip - which for you is nil, because you're not really traveling, you're working. Most of that coverage is for cancellation, trip interruption, and medical. Would home and contents cover you? Your current home is the ship.... would they treat it similarly to, say, going off to college and taking your stuff with you (I believe you can get coverage for that situation)?

If you just need coverage for your personal property then adding a floater to an existing homeowners or renter's insurance policy is usually the least expensive way to go. If you need medical assistance coverage as well then travel insurance may be better because that could cover both the personal property and medical expenses. I've included some info on travelers insurance, which talks about protecting personal belongings while traveling. I hope it's helpful.
