    Most cruise ships stay in a port for 1 day from early morning until around 5pm. Sometimes though a ship will stay overnight in a port. But this is usually at the beginning or the end of a cruise. Most people do some sort of a shore excursions while in a port. Others may just walk and explore on their own. But you will always find people that simply stay on the ship either because they have been to that port before or like the ship when things are quiet.

Cruises are great, I like the days at sea the best, everyone hangs out by the pools or bars. At ports some do excursions if thats your thing or some just go walk around, etc.

It varies by cruiseline, and cruise. Some people visit the sightseeing spots of ports docked at, and some people stay on board. It is also entirely possible that no one will be allowed to disembark if there is a serious illness aboard.
