What does it take to work on a cruise ship?

What qualifications would be best if i want to work on a cruise ship?

  • i want to work on a cruise ship. and i need to choose a program at college. what should i take to make sure this will happen?

  • Answer:

Many people it seems mistakenly believe that a career in the cruise line industry is impossible if they have no actual "on the job" experience. There are thousands of people working on cruise ships who had no prior work experience, no specific skills or no qualifications to speak of. And there tons of jobs YOU can do by simply utilizing some of the skills, experiences and personality traits that you already possess (and yes, you do have them!). You see, the problem is not lack of experience or skills but rather lack of "know-how". The most common mistakes people with little experience, skills or qualifications make when applying for jobs on a cruise ships are: Applying for the wrong types of jobs on board - or rather applying for jobs that require extensive or specialized skills and experience, such as technical officers or culinary specialists. Not knowing how to 'sell' themselves correctly to the cruise lines. Or rather; not presenting yourself in the best possible light on your resume. The trick here is to take all of the good bits that you DO have (your skills, your experiences, your personality traits) that you have gained from all the jobs you have done in the past and all the life experiences that you have so far.

Really depends what you want to do on the ship as there are hundereds of posts. Choose what you want to do then work towards doing that on a ship. If you don't like the type of work it will be 100 times worse in the close confines of a ship. You will work with the same small group of people you socialise with, sleep with and eat with... for several months on end with no break away from them. If your post is in some way guest related (this can be more than hotel staff e.g. purser) then a second language would certainly help put you above other applicants for almost all of these posts. Spanish is very good one to have given the demographics of the pax. Specialities such as sign can also be invaluable. If on the other hand you are looking for something like deck and engine crew, then it will just be a matter of job hunting through the cruise ship as opposed to more industrial or freight based operators.

Hotel management would be a excellent start. Do remember though, cruise ships also want someone who has at least 2 years experience, so if you could work in the same field as your taking college classes, that would help you get a cruise ship job sooner. Also perhaps you should read a book called Cruise Confidential. This is written by a former cruise employee. You need to know what your getting into as life working on a cruise ship is not for everyone.

Hospitality classes, though it really depends on what exactly it is you want to do aboard the ship.
