Answer:
It's a good hour from the port city to Rome regardless of whether it's by taxi, train, or tour bus. What you need to keep in mind is that you don't want to be late getting back to the ship because the ship will NOT wait for you, unless you go on a ship's excursion. And there are chances of traffic and other delays that may come up. Your first option is to book a ship's tour. When we cruised our ship offered guided tours AND also an option where they would take you by bus to Rome and drop you at a designated point and you tour on your own for the day and be back at the appointed place at a designated time. The train station in Civitavecchia is a short distance from the port but you'll need a taxi to get there. he train will take you to Rome in about an hour and it's relatively inexpensive. I have not done it so can't tell you what to expect. But you can use these web sites to investigate that option: http://www.raileurope.com/europe-travel-guide/italy/rome/train-station/termini-train-station.html http://www.raileurope.com/us/point_to_point/ptp_results.htm?execution=e1s1&resultId=76667665&noLock=1&cobrand=public&saleCountry=us&resultId=76667665&cobrand=public&saleCountry=us&rows=&itemId=-1&fn=fsRequest&cobrand=public&c=USD&roundtrip=0&from1=&to1=&v=&isAtocRequest=0&georequest=1&lang=en&route-type=0&from0=Civitavecchia,%20Italy&to0=Rome,%20Italy%20%28ROM%29&deptDate0=10/15/2013&time0=8&pass-question-radio=1&p=0&nA=1&nY=0&nC=0&nS=0 http://www.raileurope.com/us/point_to_point/ptp_results.htm?execution=e1s10&resultId=76667665&noLock=1 A third option is to book a private tour that will pick you up at the port and drop you back there: http://www.viator.com/Rome/d511-ttd?pref=02&aid=g3392&gclid=CMH9up2MiZICFQ8SQQodPE2L-g

I recommend you a good pricing company: My Cab in Rome. The service was punctual and the transfers was very comfortable! http://www.mycabinrome.com/

Keeping in mind not getting back on board in time, even though it costs more to book shore excursion through the cruise line, you are guaranteed the ship won't leave without you. Go to the cruise line's website and there is a place to book excursions in advance. Bon Voyage!!!

We took the train. Very easy. You could go over to CruiseCritic.com, click on "Community", then "Message Boards" and go to the "Ports of Call" board for lots of info about this and other ports.

Hi, absolutely avoid the taxi. a taxi costs at least 45 Euros from Fiumicinio Airport (Leonardo da Vinci) to Rome. Civitavecchia-Rome would probably cost more than 70 Euro per person. some other user has already suggested some valid shuttle service. I would also suggest: - shuttle service http://www.gmcarservice.com/service/shuttle.php?gclid=CPbD2PC_pbkCFYNe3god2xsA_Q - by train (a bit slower, but cheaper): www.trenitalia.com (choose the english language! otherwise your research will be limited among fast trains). Taxies are "good" only to move INSIDE Rome. They are usually dirty, drivers run like hell, many of them are bad-mannered and do not speak a single word of English. Be careful, they also try to hide the taximeter and fraud you with the fare or with the change, when you are a foreigner. a better service is NCC (Noleggio Con Conducente, Hire With Driver). they may cost a bit more but they usually provide a DECENT service. Anyway, october is the best month in the year to visit Rome (usually you find the best weather).

Fla Giannelo, I also used my cab in Rome, and we did a deal with the driver, when we were transferred over there. As far as I'm concerned, it was a god send to use them.

Ah, I did the same in 2010. Depends on your budget. There is a taxi that will take you there faster and with less figuring things out, but they will probably collect like 30 or 40 euro. I took the metro, It was like 45 min each way and you have to stand around a bunch of grimy Italians the whole time, but it was only like maximum 2.50 euros each way. I love it, you can buy snacks in the metro and stuff too. That's what I would recommend. just don't miss the train or the cruise will leave without you!
