Cruise companies tend to demand an awful lot from their staff: long, long hours in cramped quarters putting up with all sorts of behaviour from passengers. Many of them will confiscate your passport (or hold it 'for security'), will not pay you until your contract has ended and will not allow you to get off at different ports of call during your time with them. You can be a virtual slave and have nobody to complain to or help you out if you have problems onboard the ship.
