What is the deal with Muay Thai?

Is it really the greatest of all the stand up martial arts in the world? It seems like there are many fans of Muay Thai on Yahoo Answers. What makes it better than JKD, Karate, ...show more

Answer:
What makes Muay Thai DIFFERENT than other striking arts like JKD, Karate, taekwondo, etc etc, is that muay thai incorporates the knees and elbows, and allows strikes below the waist. Also, muay thai training philosophy and striking techniques focuses on fighting and doing damage, not complex technique or forms, or on scoring points. Muay thai has more weapons available at every range and every strike is simple. Being a master of 20 devastating techniques is much better than "knowing how to do" 100 less damaging techniques. The training philosophy is also a critical component. Muay thai training is violent and painful, everyday. At my gym, the first thing we do after stretching each day is kick eachother to warm up. We very rarely kick a heavy bag, instead, we kick eachother. When we're kicking for power, we use shin guards, and SOMETIMES use thai pads, but we're always kicking a person, so in turn, we're always being kicked. You become accustomed to absorbing kicks, and blocking out pain. You become inured to getting kicked over and over in the same spot by the hard shinbone of your sparring partner. Muay thai practitioners are unparalleled in ANY striking art for conditioning and toughness. Most of us on Answers are MMA fans, and as a mixed martial artist, if you're not proficient with your hands, feet/shins, knees, and elbows, you're not going very far as a fighter. A mixed martial artist should be skilled with every weapon available, and in every position. For dominating striking technique, it's hard to beat muay thai. Lethal knees are a good deterent to prevent a grappler shooting in on your legs, or trying to body up into a clinch.

i don't think people are talking about muay thai being the best for street fighting but for mma competition. i think in the ring as well as on the streets you would need a combo of fighting skills.
I'm a huge fan of muay Thai but i dont believe any martial art is better or worse than any other but they all have different applications in fighting and it really depends on the level of the practitioner.

The average population adore it, nothing else. They see it working on UFC & most people have never been in a street fight so they take it to be the best art as it works in an enviorment where near anything goes empty hands wise (ie ufc etc). Most people are probably completely unaware of its predecessor Muay Boran which is the traditional aspects of it that aren't cut for sanctioned ruled fights. Basically it is the new fad, just like ninjas were & karate was

its not the style but the TRAINING METHODOLOLGY that comes with it that makes an art ANY art good or not. you are more likely than not to find a muai thai gym that trains realistically than you are a jkd, karate, aikido or hapkido gym/dojo/kwoon, etc. however, thats just playign the odds- if you live in a place with a large population (ie: more people = more gyms due to more market) like a big city, then the whole "odds" thing goes out the window since you can actually research and visit specific gyms and aren't limited by probabilities. basically training against a resisting opponent (like you would in a real fight since no one in the ring or the street will just "let" you do something to them) is the key. that goes to METHODOLOGY not the art itself.

nothing, its all down to the practitioner. Its just under a lot of hype at the moment, just like BJJ. I'm not saying either of them are bad arts, but neither are they god arts that some people would have you believe. If your good and you have a good instructor, sure your Muay Thai is going to be good, but not necessarily better than some guy that is good and had a good instructor in Aikido but not necessarily worse either.

Its awesome and really applicable to MMA - most martial artists in yahoo answers practices or are fans of MMA.
along with sanshou and boxing its the best! All three are simple, direct and brutal systems of fighting with no messing around on katas etc etc
