In days gone by, if two or more teams finished on the cutoff for a finals position, say three teams finished on 8th place, they would have a mid week round robin for those teams to play each other, the winner advancing to the finals the losers saying goodbye. This process was in use into the 90's. It was considered that this took too much out of a team and would see a quick demise (and a poor crowd) to that team. Now it is essential that a team gets a good for and against differential as this can now be the difference between making the finals or missing out.
