  Those jobs requiring a degree are usually in the planning and management positions of environmental restoration. Plenty of people are needed in the simple tasks (i.e. remediation), which is about the only part of environmental jobs I know about. Something you might look at is what companies hire environmental engineers, then contact those companies about jobs. The EPA I'm sure hires plenty of non-degree employees, but if you really want to make a large impact, seeking a degree puts you in a much more feasible position to do so.
