What are the prospects for an opera singer fresh out of college?

  • Answer:

Hi Saucerful, Your voice teacher's right, there's not much demand for opera singers. However, I would also say go for it. I know 7 classically-trained singers: five from New England Conservatory, one from Boston Conservatory, and one from the Longy School of Music. Of these, three are making their living primarily by singing. Two sing part-time as they've become moms. The other two, as far as I know, are out of music completely, except maybe for singing in an unpaid church choir. The impression I've gotten from the three who sing professionally is that A) they're excellent musicians B) they're unafraid to vigorously network & make connections C) in connection with B), comport themselves professionally and are easy to work with - thus, asked for return gigs D) have a wide repertoire: be able to sing Mozart as well as Stravinsky, Handel as well as Strauss.
