What is the prayer on yom kippur?

Question about jewish prayer on Yom Kippur?

  • Does anyone know which prayer it is that all the words end in nu.

  • Answer:

There is more than one prayer that ends that way, because the "nu" signifies "all of us." When we pray for forgiveness on Yom Kippur, we pray as a community. One of the prayers begins "ashamnu, bagadnu..." This is a prayer said just before "Al Chet" in which we ask for forgiveness for specific types of wrong-doing. "Ashamnu, Bagadnu" is an alphabetical (Aleph-Bet-Gimel) listing of types of sins we (as a community) are responsible for having committed. It is alphabetical to make it easy to remember. Early synagogues did not have many prayer books -- very early synagogues did not have any books, since printing was not yet invented. Some of the sins mentioned are those done with intent, those done without intent, through error. We accept our guilt for all of these and ask for atonement from G-d.

Could be the "Ki Anu Amecha, V'ata Elokeinu...." mentioned, or the Viduy - "Ashamnu, Bagadnu, ...." The "nu" suffix is plural - "We did this wrong". Gmar Tov, and hope your Yom Kippur was productive.

The first thing that came to my mind is Avienu Malkenu (our father our king).

Vidui? The confession? nu is a suffix for plural, first person. Starts ashamnu, bagadnu, etc.

Ya... it's called Vidooui. it's the prayer where you confess your sins. This is the short one. Vidooui means confess.

Aveinu Malkeinu is my first guess as to what you're referring to. It's beautiful, isn't it...
