How would a product be considered organic?

Assuming I have a free and useful product, what can i do to be not considered as a spam by my target audience?

  • I have developed a free and a useful product and I want to inform my target audience (cafes and bars) about it. I am considering to send them informative e-mails but i am not sure because i did not take their permission to send e-mails. Nevertheless; i do believe some of them will love the product (because it is free). What should i do?

  • Answer:

Cafes and bars might not be receptive to email contact because it is not a core part of many of those people's workflow. Should you send them a letter anyway? You would need to create an irresistible offer. That is very hard to do. Please send me a copy (you have my full permission) to my Quora inbox before you send it to anyone. To give you some perspective that I am not that innocent, I have access to a large list (generated by me by web scraping) of prospects in a specific industry. They will receive a letter from me that will likely provide them with an immediate competitive advantage. It took me about 3 months of work to come up with the content and strategy for this product rollout. I will send that letter without hesitation because it is compelling, precision targeted, brief, and directs the recipient to view a professionally produced video instead of reading. Email is a part of daily workflow for these companies as they receive sales inquiries from prospects and must reply extremely quickly. If your message reads like an advertisement, you will have a problem. If your message reads like a deal proposal from a potential partner, you might not have a problem. You mentioned in a comment that you want to target multiple countries. That is not likely to be a good idea. My product actually is international from day one, but that is just a "nice to have" feature. Get a base of customers in one geographical area. For example, for me in California I have 300,000 prospects in one target segment, 1158 in another, another 900,000 (nationwide) in another and so on. I can go after the huge chunks of the market, or I can reach out to the narrowly defined 1158, fully understand their business and heavily customize my sales materials to demonstrate that, and focus my effort on making my product a part of their business process. Which do you think I am doing?

Check the legal requirements and legislation for your country. Most will require some kind of opt-in for you to be legally entitled to email those recipients. However in some countries, you can take inferred consent to email someone providing the subject of the email is pertaining to their core role & purpose. i.e. Australia: http://www.acma.gov.au/Industry/Marketers/Anti-Spam/Ensuring-you-dont-spam/spam-consent-ensuring-you-dont-spam-i-acma Inferred consent: Inferred consent can occur: via an existing business or other relationship, where there is reasonable expectation of receiving commercial electronic messages via conspicuous publication of a work-related electronic address because it is accessible to the public, or a section of the public if the address is not accompanied by a statement saying no commercial messages are wanted the subject of the message is directly related to the role or function of the recipient. Personally, I think that is a slightly tenuous basis on which to infer consent, but it is legal in some countries.
