Difference between "Alternate" and "Alternative?

What is the difference between indie and alternative rock?

  • I used to prefer alt. rock bands...but now I find I prefer indie groups. I just can't really tell what the difference is!

  • Answer:

Indie's just a band that is signed with a independent label as opposed to a major one. It's now associated with bands such as The Shins, Death Cab for Cutie and even Snow Patrol (which is signed on a major record company). Alterbative Rock is teh genre that can't really be put into any subcatagory of rock and is generally softer and more melodic that other types of rock, ie. Radiohead, REM, Incubus.

I agree with the guy above me. But "Indie" was originally, like in the 90's, referring to a band that was independently run...basically, it had a small, independent recording label. Nowadays, bands slap that label on themselves and are immediately grouped into a large fanbase... Also most "indie" music today, is either very experimental, or new folk sounding music.
