What happens at a Bar Mitzvah in order?

  • I'm stuck on some RS homework where I have to write a diary entry as if I had a Bar Mitzvah. Unfortunately, I cannot find a website which explains what happens in order. Could you ...show more

  • Answer:

The first ceremony is when they are given the tallit or prayer shawl. This is done by the parents who read a prayer and then give the kid the tallit. Then (this takes MANY years of practice) the bar/bat (bar is for boys bat if for girls) mitzvah 'chants' from the Torah which is the Jewish version of the Bible. This is especially hard because, not only is it in another language, it also doesn't have vowels, so it'd be like English without a, e, i, o, or u. Then there are the rest of the Allyahs which are when family members go up and read the other sections of the Torah and others do the prayers before and after each section. Then they help sing some prayers. Then they do their Haftorah portion which could range anywhere from a story to instructions on how to treat a disease. This is also in Hebrew, but it has the vowels. Then it wraps up and they have the party. Something you might like to include is that there is a tradition at these parties for the bar/bat mitzvah to be lifted up on a chair by the strongest men in the room and everyone dances around them to the Horah which is a traditional Jewish dance.
