How To Submit Job Application?

What happens when you submit an application for a job? How does the hiring manager check your background?

  • I'm trying to get a job at the mall but I never get a call back even though the stores I'm applying to say they are hiring. I don't have a criminal history and have never ...show more

  • Answer:

Hiring managers get 100's of applications to fill just a few jobs, so the numbers work against you. Each application gets a quick look and if the previous experience isn't exactly what they want, they move on to the next application. It is only when they have interviewed and are ready to hire someone that they will spend the money for a background check. The best way to get a job at a particular place is to get to know someone that works there. Remember the "six degrees" theory where you know someone, who knows someone, who knows someone, etc. who works there. You could also frequently shop the store and get to know the salespeople and let them know you are looking for a job there. A personal referral from a current employee goes a long way towards getting through the 100's of resumes and applications and actually getting interviewed, and maybe, even hired.

They go off your references and your employment history. They call the previous employers. They ask all kinds of questions, but if they contact the actual HR department (or anyone else knowledgeable about employment law), they'll likely only get job title, dates, salary info and whether or not you're eligible for rehire. If they talk to a hiring manager, the actual manager, or one of your colleagues, they will likely get more information When they call your references, they'll ask about what kind of person you are, they'll be digging for things like integrity, honesty, work ethic, loyalty, etc.

Well it's not just the application I think maybe it's your attitude towards finding the job, it sounds like your frustrated. Background checks can be done in a variety of ways, telephone calls to prior employers, credit checks, criminal history, dmv, personal references. I have some advice apply thinking you'll never get the job in a million years, even apply for positions your not qualified for. If your recently out of high school get a job at fast food place like MCDS, BK, WENDYS and ruff it out while you look for a better job, employers seem to like it when you already have a job. Try some temp agiences like manpower.
