How would you negotiate this job offer?

  • I am now making 52K. I have all the qualifications and extensive expereince for this job. I got an offer for 56 and then increased it to 60K after they told me the range was 55-58k. ...show more

  • Answer:

First of all, you need to be willing to walk away during the negotiation, or you've already lost. You can still try to negotiate but if they've already gone over what they said the range was I would guess that you don't have much room to negotiate. Try to find out what comparable salaries in the industry are and use that as a tool. Tell them that with everything you were told about the job and responsibilities you feel that the job is worth X amount, and ask what they could do for an offer. Don't fear silence, the one that talks first is at a disadvantage, so after you ask if they could do better just wait until they talk. If you have the chance tomorrow before you talk to the recruiter try to check out a copy of the book "Getting to Yes".
