Do employers really check if you have a degree?

If I lie and say I have a bachelors degree on my resume...do employers actually check up on it?

  • Do employers actually check if you have the degree you claim to have? Sometimes? always? or never? should I take my chances?

  • Answer:

Yes, we check up on it. Always. For one candidate, who graduated from UCLA, we were told by the college it would take 6 weeks to verify. We told the candidate to send us a copy of his bachelor's degree certificate or his final transcript showing the graduation date if he wanted to start working sooner. He did, and the confirmation from UCLA arrived about 6 weeks. Don't even think about lying about your credentials. Your career will end before it begins.

It's called fraud. It's illegal.

Don't even try it. You might be able to get a couple preliminary interviews by lying, but the moment the company is serious about you as a qualified candidate they will start checking these things. Even if by some strange fluke you land a job by lying on your resume, the stakes are just way too high. If the truth does come out at some point--which in today's computer and database filled world is a near certainty--you will lose your job. Then, not only will you be without a job, but you won't be able to use that employer as a reference. This leaves you with no degree and a huge gap in your work history, for which you will have no explanation.

Usually they do check, and you may well be asked to take your degree certificate with you if you are invited for an interview. This is not just dishonest, it is also fraudulent, don't do it.

They will often ask for your diploma, simply because someone with a degree will get more paid, and they need a copy of your diploma for their records. If you are applying for a job that require a BS, then it would be stupid to lie about it.

MrS

Yeah they do check. And why would you lie anyways? Telling a lie right fro the start is the dumbest move you can make. If you want to tell people you have a bachelors degree, go get one!

Ashley

Never lie on your application. I hire people all the time and it's easy to verify. I could ask you to bring in your diploma or I could just run a criminal background on you and reguest a educational background check as well. But I can tell you that I would only care to do that if the job actually reguires it. If the job requires you to have a bachelors degree...you better believe that we will check.

Manofstone

If you are working at McDonald's...probably not. If your job requires that degree, then they will DEFINITELY check up on it. You can actually go to jail for lying like that on your resume. It's called fraud.

What is your field?? It depends. I would not take my chances but thats me. Also, if you get hired, people will always chat you up on school, where you went, and what classes you took. You would have to have a written manuscript memorized and written out to answer all the questions. Eventually people will catch on and realize. Just go to school, don't fake it. The best adive is to be honest and be yourself. Obviously you wouldn't be being yourself.
