What can I expect at a group interview?

What can I expect at a group interview?

  • I have a group interview coming up which makes me a little nervous. I am not really sure what to expect in a group setting. It is for a large children's store.

  • Answer:

    1) Review your resume and make sure that you can explain everything on it. 2) Arrive at the interview 15 min early (don’t come too early!) 3) get a good night's sleep before your interview. 4) Eat something before the interview to be able to concentrate. 4) Make sure that you are clean, neat, and well-groomed (first Impression) *Chewing Gum not allowed *Don't put much perfume *try to cover any Tattoo on your body 5) Take a copy of your resume, transcript, and references. 6) Most marketable skills: motivation/leadership/organization/time management/communication/flexibility/pro... solving/self-starter/team player. 7) Know the organization (website research/magazine…) 8) Smile and maintain eye contact. This is one way of communicating confidence, even if you don't feel it. 9) be diplomatic. 10) If the interviewer offers his or her hand, shake it firmly. If they don't, it is appropriate to offer yours. 11) Wait until the interviewer sits or offers you a seat before sitting down. 12)Your resume tips: •Don't overcrowd your resume; allow for plenty of white space. •Keep your resume to one page whenever possible. •Keep the number of fonts you use to a minimum -- two at the most. •Use a font that is easy to read. Times Roman works well. •Do not justify the lines of type on your resume. Allow the right side of the page to "rag." •Do not overuse capitalization, italics, underlines, or other emphasizing features. •Make sure your name, address, and a phone number appear on your resume and all correspondence, preferably at the top of the page. •Print your resume on white or cream paper using a good-quality printer. •Second- and third-generation photocopies must be avoided. •Print on one side of the paper only. •Don't use words with which you aren't familiar. •Use a dictionary as you write. •Perform a spell check on your finished resume. •Carefully read every word in your resume. •Have a friend or two proof read your resume for you. 13)Honesty is a good policy. 14) Be very positive. Don't complain about anything - from your former employer to the weather. 15) If you don't understand a question, ask for clarification. This is expected and is preferable to providing an unsuitable answer. 16) Always expand. Never answer a question with a "yes" or "no." 17) Avoid negative words. For example, you would not say "I have a little experience...," you would say "I have experience......" 18) If the interviewer is making small talk, participate. Keep your answers short and positive. 19) Be aware of the interviewer's reactions. If he or she looks confused, ask if you can clarify anything. 20) Be aware of what your body is saying. Avoid closed postures. Sit upright, but not stiffly. Don’t smoke in an interview even if you were asked to. 21) Control your nervous habits. Don't swing your foot, talk with your hands (to an extreme), or fiddle with jewelers, buttons, pens, etc. 22) Trying too hard to impress; bragging; acting aggressively. 23) Show that you are interested in the job by asking questions, Try not to appear bored or anxious. Don't look at your watch. 24) Don't inquire about salary, vacations, benefits, bonuses or retirement on the initial interview. If the interviewer asks what salary you want, give a range based on your research of the job market, but indicate that you're more interested in the opportunity for continued learning and professional development than in a specific salary. 25) thank the interviewer for his/her time and consideration, Ask when you can expect to hear from him/her.

I've been in a couple of group interviews and disliked it...questions flew from everywhre and simultaneously. Be prepared, and relaxed (get enough sleep the night before so your answers will be quick, pointed, and saying exactly what you want them to know).
