This is a hard one to decide on - I am 53 years old and have been a secretary for a long time and also a legal secretary, I am currently unemployed and finding it very hard to get employment of any kind, even though i have the experience and qualifications of a legal secretary and any admin work? Good Luck

I am a female Solicitor and would always be happy to employ an older Secretary provided they have the relevant skills. This does not necessarily mean experience. The main skills I look for is a good typing speed, enthusiasm and above all, willingnes to work as part of team. Telephone manner is also essential as clients expect someone who is friendly and professional and what the clients want is what it is all about. The main thing that puts me off are people who refuse to go the extra mile or show any initiative. As an example, the worst secretary I remember was a girl who refused to look up an address (and made me find it for her) because she thought that she would be criticised for looking up an address on the internet! Umm...that's what it's there for! Definitely try. Never say never - interviews are key, just push the fact that you have the basic core skills and are willing to learn the rest. Good luck!

I don't know about the UK, but in the states, legal secretaries have mostly gone by the wayside and the work, plus more, is being done by paralegals/legal assistants. You aren't too old to learn the skills. However, at least in the states, there is a lot of age discrimination. (Yeah, it's illegal, but tough to prove.) However, I became a paralegal at 56. Of course, I used to be a lawyer.

No reason why not, as long as Legal secs are still in demand. Might be worth asking some local firms of solicitors about who they recruit or would look for. There's no such thing as a job for life and you will offer experience of life that younger rivals cannot (as well as that very non-PC comment about not leaving to have children!). Best wishes

your never too old hun - but remember the competition is young - quick - energetic and probably more sexually attractive !! however - you have a more mature outlook on life and with more experience and the fields you have done in the past give you different qualities - but you can still knock em dead at 50 im sure - business suit and stockings and still look good - so put that lippy on gal ! many female solicitors would welcome a more mature secreatry as well - there seem to be many female solicitors around one good thing is thought your not going to leave to have a baby like the rest may do. good luck
