  • Answer:

Yes, there are plenty of things one can do besides practicing law. You can do legal research for private firms and government agencies. You can teach in a paralegal program at a proprietary school. You can hire yourself out to research and write appellate briefs for attorneys who represent clients. If you get an additional degree in library science you can be a law librarian at a firm or at a law school. A lot of businesses like to hire people with law degrees, especially if they are enterprises that are heavily regulated. Go to the Placement office at your law school and ask about it. Every year they place graduates in positions that do not involve representing clients.

Practicing the law does not mean that you must be a lawyer. I am almost done going to school for my paralegal certificate. A paralegal learns more substantive law. They are not lawyers, but they are the backbone to a lawyer. The reason I chose to do this was that I did not want to become a lawyer. I am interested in the law, but I do not want to become a lawyer.
