Does voluntary work experience count in India?

Do software companies in the USA consider your work experience in India while applying for a role in the US after Masters?

  • I am currently a Senior Software Engineer working at an MNC in India and have 3 years of work experience. I really wish to pursue my Masters in the USA. However, some of my colleagues and friends mention that the work experience you gain in India is not considered by companies in the USA, which would mean I get hired as a fresh grad again(at the entry level). Is this a fact or do companies value your prior experience and give you a relevant post in the organization ?

  • Answer:

Simple, relevant experience helps you get interview calls. Whether you clear it or not, it depends on your preparation level. The money you get will be great. I can't comment on the TITLE you get.

1) First, The US company needs to know what you have done in your 3 years. If it is related to the work that the US company you are interviewing with, then they will consider it. Say for example, the MNC you worked is Microsoft and you pursue masters and later if you interview with Google they will value your 3 years experience. But if you have worked as IT support or BPO for 3 years, then it would be waste for those companies. 2) Even if you start as fresher after your MS, the pay you get in US is surely higher than Indian pay which you may get after 5 to 10 years from now. So it is wise to do MS and work in US as currently now market is good. I know friends who have worked 1 year as Software Engineer and 5 years as Software Engineer and they all start a new job and get paid well compare to Indian remuneration. Hope I made you clear. Even in US if you work for Microsoft for 1 or 2 years, then move to Google or Facebook they will consider you as just Software Engineer and not Senior Software Engineer, unless you are a demanding expert like discovered a new programming lang or something else.

Undoubtedly yes! your work experience counts because employers are interested in candidates who have worked on a couple of technologies with a good exposure to newest of the tools in the industry before their master studies. I would say even a BPO /ITES (ex: Technical support / customer support executive) job counts when your grades are really applaudable in both UG & PG. This beside the point of work experience would carry some weightage in your CV and would give an impression to the recruiter that you have some understanding of the industry, it's structure and functioning.  Go to US and do your MS all the best.

It counts heavily in your favour if you have experience in the same field as the masters you are applying for. If its in a different field then it wont count for much. It doesn't matter if it's an Indian company or a foreign one. However the stature and prestige of the company does matter. For example, a large MNC like TCS would probably have a better impact than a small local company no one has heard of.

Thanks for A2A I have worked with some people who have gone for MS after a stint in a industry here. Drawing from that experience I can say that your field of study matters the most. If your work experience and the MS research fields complement each other then you have harvested a goldmine. However you should always consider that work experience brings a positive feel to any resume. Since working at any job does not merely consist of being a technical person. It also comprises and projects a feeling of self worth and you will come across as someone who has already have prior experience of a target based structure. As many answers pointed here getting a job in USA will always depend on how positive your MS experience were and how you have performed. But rest assured work experience is always considered a positive point. This ofcourse vary when your work experience is too long to consider you for a different role altogether. Hope this helps

They do consider it but it's value depends on some factors: Whether it's an Indian company like WIPRO or MNC like Facebook,Google,Infosys. Position that you served for.

Definitely yes. They want some good experienced guy in their field. You will get higher package after masters in foreign than India. Remember experience counts everywhere either it is technical or non technical work. An experienced guy  can become 800 pound gorilla for any company.

There are many factors which would be considered by the company to consider your work experience. But the main factors are your payment and the reputation of your company in the U.S.
