Is having an associates degree in Health Information Technology worth it?

Should I pursue an associates degree in health information technology or just go for a certificate in medical?

  • Answer:

I would suggest that if you have the time and money to just go for a degree. While a certificate/diploma is more than acceptable for most coding positions, a degree will open more doors and give you more opportunities. I just have a certificate and have done very well with it, but as I am moving up in HIM, I am finding I am limited in my job search due to a lack of a degree. If you do decide to pursue an associates degree, make sure it is caahim accredited, so you can sit for the RHIT certification. While a degree is nice, its the RHIT credential that pays you more. I will say though, whether you decide on a certificate or a degree, you will still probably struggle to find a job after you graduate. Its just the way this economy is. If possible, try to find a HIM job now, that way once you are done with school, you will already have some experience and should have an easier time getting the job you want.
