Answer:
The problem these days there are no jobs and if you don't have the experience to go along with your degree or certification the person that has both gets it. Getting an additional certification in another field is always helpful however you might be back in the same boat as not having enough experience. I suggest you do some homework before you get your expectations hammered again check and make sure you can work as a phlebotomist with no experience. There is a publication at this site that might be of some help to you. http://dcarroll.smart-url.info/

Wherever you graduated from in 2008 should have a career services center that should be helping you. If they don't or are not helpful, then the value of your certification just became less. So that's the first place I'd look. Also consider talking to a resume writer and/or career coach. You may not like what follows, but it the reality of finding a job. Something that you are presenting is causing you not to be the candidate of choice. It could be anything including: How you address people What you wear How you carry yourself The way your resume is currently written Where you are presenting your background There are really good people out there who present themselves as a "hiring risk" because they don't try to figure out and match themselves to what a company/organization needs. An example might be if you were looking for a job in finance but your resume was really disorganized. That immediately turns off finance companies because they need people who can stay on top of things and prioritize. In your case, as a medical assistant you need to be able to be detailed, accurate, and flexible to accommodate unique situations amongst other things. If your resume or your in person approach comes across as anything but that, you are likely not going to go far in the process.

I'd say it is because of such a high volume of people trained in the medical assisting field. You are not the first person I've run into with a similar problem. Another reason, which you mentioned, is because they like people with previous experience. Sad thing is, there is no way to get experience unless you get a job. So for now, I'd go ahead and take that part time job. It would at least get your foot in the door and you can always keep looking for better work. The job market is really tough right now, so you should take what you can get. Also, branch out in your searches. Try job search sites like www.snagajob.com. Good luck though. It's a tough job market these days, even with training/a degree

Yeah it's tough to find work in that but not impossible. All what you can do is this. - Make a really good resume (make sure multiple people look it over that are good at english) - Go to interviews looking VERY professional in business attire. - Get as many Certifications as you can to make yourself more marketable. -and if you have it in you, learn Spanish, the medical field needs bilingual staff so badly. -continue volunteering at doctor offices and really anywhere Also take that job, something is better than nothing and that is experience.
