What are the cheapest ways to get a a certificate as a Medical Assistant?

    From the research I did when looking into this profession (I was a healthcare managment major but felt I needed more medical career experience) I found that a program at a allied health/career school looked like the best route to go. The least expensive here in my area was apx. $10,000-12,000 for a one year certifcate program. These offer Federal Financial Aid Options, have hands on training, and practical learning and interaction with instructors. I've seen some online programs in which you pay each month for the program and they are a lot cheaper, but I honestly don't think they would give you valued experience and education to help you prepared for the job. I've never heard of what you mentioned about the 15 hrs and $500. That sounds more like a CNA-certifed nurses assistant, but those require more hours than that, atleast in MO they do. That's a job that required lifting and care of patients. Have you considered Medical Transcription or Medical billing or coding? Those are desk/ office jobs that you can study for at home or online. Some billing/coding start in the reception area of an office(I was told this by a career counselor at Everett College-a school that has these programs with Financial aid. First get a job at the good hospital doing something like housekeeping or food service. This will make it easier later. Second, apply to a tech school. It takes about a year and will cost you about $500 plus the cost text books. Most hospitals offer tuition reimbursement if you are currently working there and going to school.
