Why is it so hard to find a job as a medical assistant?

Why is it so hard to find a medical assistant job when you're just finishing school?

  • Answer:

There are far more MAs being churned out than there are jobs--in certain areas. Most docs or clinics only use a few MAs, and there is a great deal of competition in desirable markets. Try looking at some of the big hires like Kaiser Permanente--they use MAs in all their clinics & walk-in facilities. Also, you may need to be creative. Look for private small clinics just opening up and go in person. You could also call adds for clinics, health agencies etc. that are looking for LVNs and see if you could qualify. Also look at adds for front office jobs (you need to just get in the door). For experience you might consider asking if you could do some work for a very reduced rate (or free even); as many jobs want experience. Try & network with friends--do they go to the doctors? Have them keep an eye open for you for a position. Go to job healthcare fairs, look at agencies such as the Red Cross, industrial clinics etc. Despite a growing field, it is not easy to always find health care jobs.
