A registered nurse will make more than a paramedic, hands down. As for becoming an ER nurse typically you must have one year of experience before getting to work in one. Some hospitals have training programs and you can start right out of school...just make sure the hospital has a reputable program so you won't feel like you are being thrown to the wolves. A nurse is not just a nurse, there are so many specialty areas and nurses work to the needs/demands of their area. A floor nurse can not just walk into ER nursing and expect to be proficient off the bat. I've seen this time after time when hospitals have sent "extra help"...they look like deer in headlights. I would likely look the same way if I was sent to go work up on a floor. At my facility ER nurses are paid higher, as are CCU/ICU, L&D, and Case Management. It's because they are all specialized areas. I'd definitely go the RN route. Paramedic pay is lousy and they deserve to get paid more.

I've been a paramedic for 9 years, and I recently became an RN (emergency department). Being a paramedic is the most thankless career there is. No one realizes what responsibilities we have, what we do, and how hard we work. I work 24 hour shifts, and most of the time don't sleep the entire shift. I do things every shift that nurses either have never done, never will do, or have to have a doctors order. I get paid squat being a paramedic. BUT, as an RN, the pay goes up considerably. GO TO RN SCHOOL! Don't be a paramedic. It's too hard and it pays way too little. Good luck.

A nurse is a nurse, for the most part. There are some pay differences between units depending on the amount of training, education and experience required to work in that area. If you are looking to mix nursing and paramedic training, I would consider flight nursing (medivac helicopters). Due to the critical nature of these patients, they require the presence of an RN in their transport who possesses additional training. Good Luck!
