Wow. Rachel's info is quite a bit different than what most of us are seeing. It depends *where* in CA you are looking to work and it depends on your degree. Most major metro area hospitals, including in CA cities, are giving strong preference to or requiring a BSN for new hires. BSN "preferred" will essentially mean required when you check job listings, unless you have a special circumstance. However, in areas where any and every nurse is needed and you are competing against only other ADNs, then you are fine. This might be in smaller or more rural areas or new growth areas. Other areas are so saturated with new grads that the BSN is a must and jobs can be hard to come by unless you really busted your butt to line up work before graduation. Other folks can have problems finding work and may end up in rehabs, skilled nursing facilities, retirement homes, etc. ADN and BSN programs are both 2 years in length after your prereqs/GE are complete. http://www.uclahealthcareers.org/career-areas/nursing/new-grad-residency-program UCLA Med Center's new grad program - BSN preferred The specialized jobs at Cedars all prefer or require a BSN. UCSF Med Center is BSN preferred for specialized jobs.

You'll never find a job working an RN until you get nurse license

I think it will take about 2 years to complete your RN. Are you just getting an associates or bachelors degree in nursing? You should have no problem getting a job as a RN in Cali. Cali is always needing to hire nurses from other states as travelers to help fill open positions. Yes an associates in nursing is just as good as a bachelors and don't let anyone tell you different. All that matters is that you have RN behind your name. Here is a great resource on becoming a RN. The site has lots of great articles about nursing school and nursing and a community forum where you can ask questions. Good luck!
