    First of all SALES IS NOT MARKETING Too many people think they are interchangable, they are not. They are very different. Marketing involves product development (what is your product), market segmentation (who might want to buy your product & why), product positioning (how does it fit/differ with similar products and substitutes). Marketing is RESEARCH and planning. A marketeer never engages a customer in an attempt to get them to make a purchase. Marketeers only talk to customers for research/opinion purposes. Sales is the engagement of the target market, developed by the marketeers. If someone is advertising a 'sales & marketing' job. It is a sales job offered by someone who has no idea what marketing is.

it would depend on the company, their policies, and especially what they are selling. sales and marketing for a car dealership is going to suck *** compared to a high end soft drink or alcohol. i work in sales, and sell digital imaging services. not exactly exciting work, but i like who i work with and there isn't a lot of pressure to knock on doors or put out advertising. actually a lot of companies have a combined position of sales and marketing. my direct boss is VP of Sales & Marketing. however, there are only about 8 executives in the entire company. so it is a smaller company where people have to take on multiple roles.
