You probably have an ingrown toenail, I had the same thing and actually had to get it surgically cut out. Try this - (my doctor tried this before surgery) take some cotton from a cotton ball or q-tip, and using a toothpick or whatever, wedge the cotton underneath the edge of the toenail so it's cushioned against the skin of your toe. Change it everytime you shower, and see if it helps after a few days. It might cause the toenail to "grow out" of being ingrown. Word of caution - if it starts pussing, that means it's infected and you will probably have to get it surgically cut out.
