I joined one of the top 3 IT services firms in 2006. Starting salary was 2.16 lpa - which quickly increased to 3+ lpa after completion of 1 year and a hike cycle. A friend of mine who joined a Chinese company which makes modems had a starting salary of almost 3.3 lpa at the same time - but this guy knew his subject well and had actually accrued knowledge when doing his engineering, unlike yours truly :-) The current salary figure for an IT services job reflects the size of the pool of people who are in the market for an IT services job (tens or hundreds of thousands), and the fact that most companies still have to spend a lot of money on technical and soft skills training to actually get productive client billable work done out of a software engineer trainee.

In 2000-2004, it was of the range above 1.5 less than 2.2 lakhs, now it is above 3 less than 4 lakhs. Talking of inflation, huh, It has actually declined if you factor in a minimal 6% inflation YoY, although there are reasons to believe that inflation has been almost twice of that.
