It sounds like you can catch waves but I hope you have had at least one lesson before you by a board. I'm not just saying this because I own one of the surf schools in OC. Believe me when I say that if you don't follow surf etiquette and safety rules when it's crowded you can easily get hurt or hurt someone else. Any instructor can teach you most everything you need to know. Another problem is that we have a summer hours rule in OC. After 10 am you can only surf in designated areas. Go early so you can surf away from the big crowds Also, a good funboard around 8 ft isn't hard to handle or paddle out on.
