What wetsuit do I need?

What kind of wetsuit do I need for surfing in San Diego?

  • im considering buying a full length wetsuit for surfing in the winter in sd. how thick of a suit should i buy

  • Answer:

the guys are right. you need at least a 3/2 fullsuit. some people who get really cold (if you're really skinny and have no body fat to keep you warm this might be you) prefer a 4/3 despite the fact that they are a little tougher to move around in. Xcel makes great suits and their 4/3 is surprisingly flexible. O'neil also makes killer high end suits. A suit that has liquid tape on the seams will keep you warmer that one without sealed seams (because cold water seeps in through the tiny stitching holes), though it will definitely cost you more. Most important thing is to try on suits from different manufacturers as every brand is cut slightly different and you want to find the one that suits your body shape best. i'm personally with greg who says a 3/2 is good enough, but i'm also the first person trunking it come spring.

last two comments: spot on. If you get cold really easy, though, and have another suit (springsuit), you can go with a 4/3. There are a lot of people I know down here that wear those from October-April and then a springsuit the rest of the time. I wear a 3/2 all the way through the winter, and I have never been cold, but I am usually the first one in the spring trunking it and the last one to put on a wetsuit in the Fall anyway. The wetsuits the other dudes here recommended are good. I just have a cheap Ripcurl wetsuit that works fine lol but I wish I could afford a better suit.

nice frank.. haha i have the new e bomb 2009 model and i love it. its super warm and flexible its a chest zip. i would also recommend a 3/2 any thicker most likely itll get too hot. the water is only at its coldest peak for about a month or so.

I would buy alright thick one, try one that covers the knees and arms, full length arm would be preferable. I surf there like every summer and the water is a little cold but i was surfing in a wetsuit and a couple days with just a bikini but I would imagine it gets a lot colder in the winter! P.S Surf at Mission Beach or la Jolla Shores
