If it's warm enough, I love hiking in the rain. Especially if the trail is soft enough for barefoot hiking! But it depends on length of your hike and temperature. Keep in mind that you will get wet regardless of rain jackets, rain boots, or ponchos. In my experience, if it's more than just a drizzle, waterproof materials either don't work well, or you'll just be soaked in sweat by the end of the day. Either way, you're wet. And if you're staying overnight, a rain cover on your backpack is just about useless. Use a bag liner to keep your gear dry. I use one or two trash compacter bags (which are stronger than regular trash bags) and leave my useless pack rain cover at home. And if you're staying overnight, it probably goes without saying to take extra clothes and socks to sleep in. You want to get your feet dry at night. And, again if it's warm, just accept that you're going to be wet and enjoy it. Don't dangerously hop on slippery rocks and logs. Your feet are going to get wet, so just slosh through puddles, and let your feet sink into the mud. You will enjoy it much more and you can avoid slipping. If it's cold, that changes things. Hypothermia can happen quickly if you're wet. Consider taking an extra set of clothes, and if you're staying overnight, use bag liners and keep clothes and your sleeping bag in their own separate waterproof bags. Make sure your tent doesn't leak by spraying it with a hose in your backyard before heading out, or better yet, just go ahead and reseal all the seams with a Tent Seam Sealer. One final thing, depending on where you are, watch out for rising rivers and creeks. If it looks dangerous to cross, it definitely is. If you have any more questions, I love talking about this stuff. Why not? What do you think humans have been doing for the last 50,000 years? (That was before TV ;)

Absolutely! with rain you have certain precautions to take, as another poster stated dress accordingly with proper rain wear and boots and layering of your clothing. Creeks and streams could suddenly overflow within seconds so avoid those area's and always leave an itinerary of the who, what, where and when with folks you trust. http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/dress-layers.html http://www.princeton.edu/~oa/winter/wintcamp.shtml http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/before-leave-home.html

I spent three weeks in Alaska last summer. It was impossible to NOT hike in the rain. Wear a waterproof shell and slacks, such as those lined with GoreTex. If light rain, then wear a quick-dry fabric pair of pants with a rain jacket.
