    I am really glad when people know what they do not know. Going into the wilderness without reasonable caution and attention to gear causes many visitors to the mountains to either require rescue, medical treatment, or body recovery. The lessons I learned going all the way to Eagle Scout did not fully prepare me for serious expeditions, alone, into remote locations. By reading a good book on backpacking and visiting advice internet advice articles such as provided by REI, you can learn a lot. In order to get on the same track as your girlfriend, it sounds like you may be spending $1,000 on backpacking equipment to be prepared. Gear you should start acquiring: Osprey makes some good multi-night backpacks, $160; a good tent will weigh about four pounds, $200-400; a down sleeping bag adequate for your needs, $200; water filter, $100; a few underlayer fleeces, $15-35 each; windbreaker, $100-200; down jacket, $250; backpacking stove, $100; insulated hikers, $160, headlamp, $20-60; firestarter, $25. As discussed by many earlier inquiries, BEST is not CHEAP for gear.

A lot of things change depending on what season you plan to camp. im assuming you're going soon. wool is the best, it keeps you warm even when wet.don't wear cotton its horrible when wet but i like it in the summer. always bring at least two pair of socks per day you're out, if you change them before bed you will stay warmer and wont stink yourself out. base you're pack on the season you're camping in and weather you're backpacking it or car camping. they can get Pretty expensive. a good cheaper brand is Black Pine, or Nebo. get an internal frame pack i think they are much more comfortable. 5000 cubic inch is a good starting size for a night or two. i love my kelty but a cheaper version is ROCK, ive heard they are made by kelty. a good cheap boot is HI-TEC. ive worn them for years on shorter hikes with the scouts. for the longer trips my favorites are Merrell. for a tent go to you're sporting goods store and find 3 season tent with a full rain fly, you do get what you pay for but a cheap one will last you a year or two. i hope this helps and good luck with you're girl.

Are you backpacking or "car" camping? If you are camping then cloths you don't mine getting dirty or torn. Jeans, shorts, a long sleeve and short sleeve shirt, light weight waterproof jacket, sweat shirt, extra socks at least one pair of wool socks.tChe k out Sierra Trading Post or Campmor for some great deals. I like polyester blends clothes they are light and dry quickly. Pants with zip-off legs are great.

You've gotten some good answers already. I would recommend that you have your girl friend give you a list of things she thanks you'll need. She has the experience so learn from her. Go as light as possible and what you take in the way of clothes depends on the weather. All the sites mentioned in the other answers are good, but don't get overloaded with too much info.
