A small group of us, about 15/20 are planning on camping for a weekend away. Ideally we all want to be away from other people etc. Anyone know of any good places where you can camp in ...show more

Answer:
On Dartnoor is the only place in England you can be more than four miles from a road. It is definitely not for the people described in the answer above. People have died on it, including some members of a scouting party whose leaders should have known better than to take inexperienced youngsters on an expedition ill-equiiped to cope with the sudden bad weather that befell them. A girl also died while with an organised group after she was swept into a river in bad weather. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/girl-swept-away-by-river-dies-438962.html . . . More than one experienced walker and climber has died either from accidents or as a result of bad weather on Dartmoor and many other British hills. http://hikerhell.blogspot.com/2008/09/teenage-scout-dies-on-arthurs-seat-uk.html . . . Dartmoor can be dangerous. So can the Yordshire Moors and any other exposed country in Britain. If 15/20 is the number of people in the group you will be conspicuous and unwelcome almost anywhere that is reasonably easy to get to for wild camping. If it is an age range I hope you will stay sensible and not light illegal fires or damage landowners' property or even camp without permission where you are likely to be discovered. No fun at al that way and could be expensive if the landowner decides to take legal action. I agree with the above that Scotland has some delightful places to get away from it all. It has freedom of access laws which mean you can walk and camp wild on almost any wild country in Scotland. Sutherland is gorgeous. There are beaches along the north coast which are a delight... pure clean sand and totally unspoiled. And mostly totally unvisited too for weeks on end. At Durness there is a good campsite above the sandy cliffs which is a great escape hole if the weather turns nasty on the hills. The campsite bar is the village pub, to avoid a long walk up the hill to the commiunity centre bar. Get there on the post bus along the north coast road or all the way from Inverness. The post buses are great. You get to see loads of places as the drivers deliver mail to out-of the-way farms and villages, and they are cheap. They can normally carry five passengers only so be early in the queue if you're getting on in town. Get out where you find somewhere good and ask about the buses back and the chances of having seats available...no point getting stuck anywhere. Further south, the road over Rannoch Moor and into Glencoe is one of my favourite cycling routes. Rannoch is wild, but dangerous for inexperienced people in some areas due to the number of black holes scattered over it. You'll soon find out what they are when you accidently step into a hidden one and find your leg drenched in stinking black bog-water and your foot stuck solid at the bottom. Not fun. The bigger ones can swallow you whole. If you can't get out you'll die in it. Eventually. Some of them have deer in them, already dead. The Cairngorm and the Trossachs have loads of wilderness where you can disappear for weeks undetected if you wish, but be careful of the weather wherever you go on Scottish hills and mountains or any others. It can turn bad very quickly, as more than one ill-fated group and many individuals on Dartmoor and elsewhere have discovered to their terrible cost. http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/rannoch/rannochmoor/index.html . . . . nah dartmoor and Yorkshire moors are for chickenssss plus you could get in trouble for building camp fires , if you want to go really wild , where you wont be disturbed for days then the north Pennines is good , really clean rivers and loads of fire wood in the little woodland clearances , if your will to travel a bit further afield then the top north/north west of Scotland is fantastic but freezing , you need to know your stuff and have the best equipment but due to the harsh weather you can run in to trouble so not for the faint of heart !! lol its like a totally different culture up there practically , very Scandinavian , very wild and on your travels there are amazing pubs and i can promise you could walk for weeks and not run into anyone !

Buildering - The illicit climbing of man-made structures. Wild camps occur where no one was intended to camp. Start by Bouldering, the climb of large stones, and progress to larger sculpted forms. What is the largest bridge and where can one camp upon it?

I would suggest Somerset esp around Glastonbury as it is a beautiful area and got a laid back feel to it, BUT if you think that it is OK to wild camp and do not check out the land for a possible owner you could have a prob - wild camping is not much done in England and some landowners have a bad attitude.
