How To Sell Or Buy Ivory?

How can we stop the market manipulation, insider trading by big players or self proclaimed gurus who provide buy/sell recommendation in financial media?

  • Do we have any site which tracks the date/time of guru recommendations, their own/customer purchase/sell data etc. This can provide insight of market manipulation such as recommend buy in media and then selling the stock on that day/week. Also this can help in judging the effectiveness of guru advice-how consistently their calls gets converted. Sometimes they suggest a buy at price x and then suggest a sell at price x+5%. And then the price goes to x+50% and then they advertise that our recommendation made 50% gain. But ideally if someone really followed all the recommendation of that guru he/she should have sold it at 5% gain and would not have pocketed 50% gain.

  • Answer:

    1) Stop listening to them.  If you listen to a stock guru, and lose money, frankly it's your own fault.  Also, don't expect other people to do your homework. 2) In the US, anybody that appears on television or broadcasts buy/sell information almost by definition has no inside information.  This is one very weird thing about the US.  Big hedge fund manager goes on Bloomberg to talk about economic trends.  The funny thing is that people listen to him supposedly because he has "inside information" but if he really had "inside information" he wouldn't be able to talk publicly.  Also, since he is a big hedge fund manager, presumably you already know that he is invested in stock, and he will make money if you follow his advice. 3) There are no sites that track this information because sites don't care about accuracy.  The purpose of the financial media is to get you to watch television so that they can sell you ads.  They don't care whether their advice is any good or not.  Same with "research" the purpose of research is to get you to buy or sell stock.

I think there were couple of such sites for the Indian market where you could track the performance of these self proclaimed gurus but they shut down because of lack of interest. Just remember these so called gurus make most of their money giving tips and advise instead of actually making money in the stock market. If anyone consistently makes money in the stock market, why would that person give any tips to others.
