The effects of 800,000 people in Fiji using diesel generators or not is not the issue or question. If they all stopped it would not mitigate anything in the big world. What we need to address is how the small pacific island countries will ADAPT to the rising sea levels and changing weather patterns. Seawalls are a waste of time and resources. Rising levels will negate them as a solution as well as the storms. Relocating populations inland and to higher ground is the answer too difficult for governments and NGO s to face. Some countries will become uninhabitable for humans in reality as the fresh water lens disappear. These people need to relocate. No easy answer here, but saying we can stop climate change and save these nations is foolish. Redirect energy and resources to practical solutions for the people.

Avoid Diesel engines (resort power generators, boat engines, etc.).  Solar is plentiful in Fiji.  Diesel is "messy" and contaminates not just the air, but the ocean and fresh water sources vital to Fiji's future.  Granted, the population of Fiji is a grain-of-sand compared to the coal-burning and oil-burning mega-populations of the rest of the world ... who are WAY more responsible for the greenhouse effects.

People have been touting simplistic answers about solar for long years with little change. Solar only gets market penetration at domestic level where large subsdies exist. Subsidies usually only exist in rich nations to satisfy higher-order needs (for example, to meet agreed carbon reduction targets in international legal frameworks). Solar is not a silver-bullet technology, it has advantages and disadvantages. It is not suitable for all types of power requirements and can only be part of an energy portfolio. There is a need for all types of power generation and storage - coal, gas, hydroelectric, geothermal, wind, solar, nuclear, and new technologies not yet developed. What humanity needs is a rebalancing of the portfolio, but legacy effects of existing technologies and macroeconomic factors will make this a slow process. Solar generation is now reasonably priced, but storage issues persist - large scale economics are not currently viable due to high battery cost, this will change in time as new technologies come onstream and petroleum fuel costs continue to rise. A typical 65ah lead acid battery weighs about the same as a 20l jerry jug of diesel, but the diesel jug is far more energy dense. Solar power systems are not suited to certain applications where there are spikes in demand, or even activation spikes when individual devices are powered up. Solar and has its own maintenance issues and more daily maintenance requirements than the much maligned diesel generator - without daily cleaning, a solar panel loses generative capacity very quickly due to dirt and dust on the glass - I learned this on my friend's solar-powered boat. It now seems obvious, but I had never thought of it before. Near my house there is an enormous solar array on the roof of an industrial building, but I have never seen anyone cleaning it... maybe I should email them. The diesel generator is ubiquitous because it works - simple, low maintenance, convenient, versatile and supported by existing infrastructures. Don't underestimate the complexity of inertia!
