My friend has updated his Xbox 360, but was asked to sign in and cant remember his password?

My friend has a similar problem, but he doesn't know the windows live ID. He spent about an hour trying to get help through customer service chat, then another hour trying for help on the phone. They ended up telling they could not provide his windows live ID because the account had not been completely registered. Bogus. He lost all of his saved games. If it is just the password you are unsure of, they have a procedure for that online.
