What is a foot valve in a pump?

How do you check if foot valve is bad in shallow well pump?

  • Answer:

If you have a two inch or larger well, it is customary to have a foot valve at the 30 foot level in the well. In order to see if it's leaking you would have to pull it from the well by the pipe it is hanging on. If you don't pull the Foot Valve, you could have a bad valve, bad pipe (holes from electrolysis, acidic water) or a leaky joint. So you can't tell without pulling the entire column of pipe to inspect it and the Foot Valve.
