Should I start on my website now?

How can I start a website in a professional way as a teacher in which the target audience is other teachers?

  • I spent lots of money trying to establish a website (around $3000) I spent a lot of time trying to learn how to create a website. Both went wrong because the result barely met my expectations. I got lost in the amount of definitions and opinions. I talked to lots of people like website designers, logo designers and "professionals" who made it worse than I would've. All I want is a website with an attractive and unique layout and I need to know how to manage it. I don't like the personal colorful kind of teacher websites I see around. I want something people would consider professional. I have no idea where to start and what categories I should include because I have so many ideas. I want to start from scratch and I want to start right and I don't know how.

  • Answer:

    1.  Start a website. 2.  Write about teaching. 3.  Learn about SEO. 4.  Tell your friends.  You haven't said enough about where your concerns are for me to provide any more useful feedback.  Happy to continue to engage if you provide more details. With additional details: If you can learn WordPress in an inexpensive class, then learn WordPress and create a site with the TwentyFourteen theme.  It will immediately look classier than most of the "teacher" sites you have seen (I know what you mean about them!) Use a good picture for the header image and most people will not notice that you are using twentyfourteen. If WordPress is beyond your ability, look at Square Space.  It will cost about $300 / year.  It appears to be fairly easy to use and will give you results you will be happy with. The easiest way to make a site look professional with limited means is to use good photographs that show what you want.

Other answers

1. Register an appropriate domain. 2. Get a hosting account with dreamhost. Dreamhost is inexpensive and has great support. It also offers one-click install for Wordpress. 4. Wordpress is awesome, free and features tons of plugins. Buy a Wordpress theme from http://themeforest.net. Beautiful and classy themes will cost a max of $40. 5. Now the most difficult part - great content.
