Can you use any images you find on the web to post on your social media sites?
-
I'm slowly taking over social media where I work and am curious about photo/image rights. I use photoshop to create interactive posts to push out on social media and I'm wondering if I have to buy every image I use on iStock. Are most images online fair game?

Answer:
Since you're using the images for commercial purposes, I would definitely recommend staying away from images that do not have consent to reproduce or modify. With that said, however, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll have to purchase stock photos. You may be able to find suitable images using image search filters that specify usage rights. Google has this option in its Advance search settings, but the Creative Commons search tool can let you quickly search other services, including Google Image search. Creative Commons CC Search: http://search.creativecommons.org I hope this helps!

You definitely don't want to just grab any image you see. Stock photo companies representing photographers and even independent photographers will come after you if you use their work when you shouldn't have. I know people that this has happened to. Shane's response about Creative Commons is a good way to get free images, but keep in mind you have to link back to the person who created the image to use it. This can become cumbersome and can distract from the links you actually care about in your posts. It will cost some money, but the simplest and most headache free way to do things is to just buy stock images. Since this is for work, you may want to find out if your company can invest some resources into credits on your preferred stock photo site to be used on their social properties.
