What places in the Philippines compare best with Shanghai and with Beijing?

How does Beijing's nightlife compare to Shanghai?

  • Shanghai has got it goin on. How does Beijing compare?

  • Answer:

Ah where to begin with this question. So having experienced both cities and the nightlife in both for sure, we had a think and here are our answers (but do keep in mind that all of this is academic and really does depend on who you are out with on the night of course): 1) Beijing is cheaper than Shanghai - so your money goes further on them food and drinks. 2) Not sure what sort of music you are into but whilst both cities cater for most, Beijing is definitely the home of Chinese rock. (Take your fancy?) In contrast, Shanghai being a 'newer or rather more international, city - is very much about clubbing music at night time. So if you want a selection of live music too, then Beijing is your city. 3) However, saying that - Beijing definitely has a thriving nightlife for literally everyone. Large clubs covering a range of musical genres, have established themselves. Techno, House, R&B and Hip Hop are very popular and you will see big name DJs spinning in Beijing. There are also lots of bars with the most popular area being Sanlitun. Once you're done with your early drinks, you can head over to the giant clubs such as Vics (very popular!), White Rabbit, and other clubs - things are open well into the early hours :-) Essentially it's hard to compare both cities, as they are so different but one thing is for sure - Beijing can stand toe to toe with Shanghai for it's nightlife. Come experience it :-) Thanks, Team CSA!

Shanghai has way more French.  Beijing, while it has the classy, blow-all-your-parents-money-on-gigantic-bottles-of-unpourable-Chivas places, also has a bigger selections of dive bars, pubs, neighborhood joints, and hutong bars.  Beijing also seems to have more bars that attract almost an exclusively Chinese clientele where no one speaks English.   Beijing's got a pretty active rock scene, if that's your thing.    Wudaokou is the student area, San Li Tun is a mixture of upscale, down scale, no scale, and "are they really going to do that right here in the open?" scene.  Gongti's got the sort of big dance club scene if your into that.  Gongti north gate has clubs that cater more to the foreign scene, west gate a more local scene, and east gate has a weird restaurant-club mix scene.   Dongcheng, Gu Lou, and the hutongs are were the (in)famous hutong hipsters hang out...this is where you'll get your decent rock shows and overpriced PBR's.  If your into chick with tats and 80's leather jackets, this is it.    Ritan area has Russian nightlife.  Don't get in fights with Russians, but Russian food is surprisingly (for me!) good/cheap here.   Wangjing/Wudaokou has Japanese and Korean joints.  If your into bombing soju and Suntory highballs on tap, do it here.   Houhai and Huguosi have bars that seem to attract Chinese/tourists.    If you're into a more "Chinese" experience, in summer time anyplace that can fit 3 tables and a keg becomes a sort of outdoor BBQ beer garden type john called a "dapaidang (大排档)."  Drinkwise, expect nothing but 'jing(燕京), qingdao, and the incomparable Baijiu, though you can BYOB (go haerbies and Jingjiu!), so go wild.    For a more bougie, I'm here with my wife and kids type vibe, Xingfucun and Lido have bars/restaurants for people here on the expat package.  They speaka da foreign here, so if the long days and nights of being babied and pampered by the over hospitable Shanghaiiese has made you go soft and lose your Chinar mojo, hit these places up for a more "expat bubble" scene.   Theres other places scattered throughout the city so take your pick.  The sort of classic "one night in Beijing" normally starts in Sanlitun, and if it achieves enough escape velocity, makes its way to Gongti beimen, and then ends in shame, regret and confusion.  Anyways dude, quit asking people online and just hop in the high speed and see for yourself.
