Computer Vision: What is the right time to use Narrow Stereo Camera or Wide Stereo Camera?

  • I want to know the difference between Wide Stereo Camera and Narrow Stereo Camera, also want to know what's the situation we preferred to use wide stereo or narrow stereo camera. Thanks~

  • Answer:

A stereo camera has a certain 'blind range' - depths so near the camera that both cameras cannot see those points simultaneously (both cameras need to see a point simultaneously for its disparity and hence depth calculation to be possible). It follows from logic that narrow baseline stereo cameras have a smaller blind range than wider baseline stereo cameras. But then the narrow stereo camera will not be able to discern depth effectively at far depths. So you would use a narrow camera if your application requires depth estimation for very nearby objects and a wide stereo camera if the application is opposite.
