Answer:
Check the syllabus for both the departments and analyse as to which you will find more interesting of the two. Take that. Don't think about placements now. They will come anyhow. All the best!

See, since you screwed up JEE, you have to look for an opportunity in which you can outrun your peers. Now, there are options you can avail. 1. study in JU. Such low fees will not affect your or your parents' pocket. Later appear for CAT and get an MBA. Land up a job with great salary. You're done. 2. go for a private engg college. You can bag an IT job. But again, you can easily get the same from JU too. So, no point going to private colleges. 3. Only JU in whole India (may be one or two IITs too) teaches printing technology. So, study well and you'll surely be placed in some newspaper company, maybe. 4. Also, another option, which is a bit more costly is to go for IT in Jadavpur. IT gives you a go to sit for large IT companies with CS students. and also, in many cases, IT students get decent jobs.

Better go for jadavpur, nobody knows IEM outside bengal . In the intial year of your carrer college name matters a lot. If you choose private coll , It is better to choose CSE over ECE as there is no scope for ece students except in IT field .

First think where you want to see yourself 4 years down the line. If you think you'll be satisfied with a 25k salary in one of countless cubicles in a software firm, then any stream in IEM/Techno/Heritage is good enough. It really ain't that difficult to get into IT firms irrespective of your stream as long as you are smart, have a decent communication skill and capable of producing strips of C codes. Avoid underrated streams in JU/Shivpur in this case. students from these streams aren't allowed in campus interviews for IT Firms. Now, if you study printing or BT from JU you'll have no choice but to go for higher education because just a graduate degree in these courses aren't good enough. Take these streams only if you're ready for higher education.....

I too graduated from printing from JU(2006-2010) batch. You can go for printing or ece/cs/it in any private college.Success from graduation will depend on your talent rather than college. But few pointers about a degree in printing: 1)Now a days IT jobs for a fresh graduate from non it/CS background has dried up and things arenot that rosy now(since i too am working in a IT firm since i graduated from ju printing). 2)Unluckily barring a few teachers rest are least interested in having a good relationship with printing firms that turn up for http://campussing.So So it a risk telling you whether 4 years down the line you will end up with a job or not.For that matter a CS/IT from a private college wouldnot guarantee you a IT job too as IT booms looks to be over before our 2010 pass out batch entered. But if you are in printing you have two job options:Printing(core) or IT. 3)Quality of students in JU is better than any other college in WB(barring Shibpur and IIT) hence with them you will dream big(CAT,GMAT,GRE) 4)Low fees so ROI(return of investement) would be excellent. I think if you have monetary constraints, printing would be good(i took it because of monetary constraints) else opt for IT/CSE/ECE. One big truth that i want to tell you: In the past decade IT has taken a chunk of fresher engg grads. The core companies never hire truckloads of engg http://grads.So with the IT slowing down unemployement will go up meaning you may be forced to go for MBA/Mtech when you graduate from your private engg college. For playing safe a ECE/IT/CSE from a private college would be better as post graduation you can go for mtech/mba but mtech in printing(in india) would not be much the worth.Plus in most off campus jobs/govt jobs printing engg would not be allowed to appear. calculate you options before you take the decision.

Considering this year's placement scenario i suggest you to take food tech and biochemical technology. But your rank could bring you construction engg also which has a better prospect compared to those.
