Science experiments for high school students?

Why ISRO doesn't try to popularize space science among school & college students?

  • No doubt ISRO has done tremendous work and helped in bringing glory to India but at the same time it has miserably failed to make space science popular among students and general masses. NASA has dedicated websites for children http://www.nasa.gov/audience/forkids/kidsclub/flash/index.html http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/ and many other resources. Now compare it with ISRO website http://isro.org/ and try your best to find any interesting resources/projects (for students). Isn't it time for ISRO to take up this responsibility and start popularization of space science among the students ?

ISRO does try, but what it is doing to popularize space science is clearly not enough for various reasons that need not be elaborated here. Most of the attempts till date, some of which I have highlighted below, have been limited to the southern states of India, which are also the home of major ISRO centres. -The http://www.worldspaceweek.org/wsw/index.php is celebrated by various ISRO centres, but the reach is mostly limited to the home state/city of the specific centre. VSSC, Trivandrum WSW celebrations in 2012 had scientists and engineers from VSSC traveling to various parts of Kerala to give lectures to school students. -VSSC also takes part in Thrissur Pooram (Google it) which as the name says created awareness only in Thrissur and nearby towns. -ISAC Bangalore recently celebrated the National Science Day by conducting a quiz programme for school students in Bangalore. -Lots of undergraduate and graduate engineering students come to VSSC to do projects, but sadly, like I said before, they belong to Kerala. In fact, if one wants to apply through open category to VSSC for a project, the first rule is that they have to  be from a college in Kerala. While this is obviously unfair, I am in no position to give an answer on ISRO/DOS's policies and regulations. -IIST @ Schools http://www.hindu.com/2011/02/05/stories/2011020556530400.htm) is a programme run by IIST to popularize space science among students of schools mostly in Kerala. -VSSC has a wonderful space museum inside what was once a church (The birthplace of India's space programme) which is open to public, but I am not sure of the procedure. I think one needs to go through the Public Relations Office of VSSC to get passes for the museum, unless you are related to a VSSC employee. PS: To be frank, the ISRO website is not good and has immense scope for improvement. There are few communities that have taken the initiative of spreading awareness of the significance of the missions of ISRO, their effects and long term impact as we all know there is a big disconnect between ISRO and a common man. https://www.facebook.com/fslovesisro http://indiaeducationdiary.in/Shownews.asp?newsid=31159 http://www.theindianrepublic.com/nation/function-space-initiates-awareness-campaign-isro-100048140.html
