Is it illegal to download from the pirate bay?

i know that it is Swedish-owned and in sweden there are no laws prohibiting what that website does, so is it still illegal to download from there in the U.S.?

the website itself is not illegal, it depends on what you are downloading. the official reason for the website existing is to share private files, but this makes sharing movies and programs very easy as well. if you are downloading something that you usually have to pay for, it is illegal. ie. games, movies, some programs, music.
