  Actually, I think the punishments were lax compared to McLaren which was given a record fine and disqualified from the championship. Meanwhile, Renault will only be banned if they cheat again within the next two years and two of their top guys were banned. If you think about it, it is too lax because they were not even disqualified from the race or suspended from the championship. Having the sponsors leaving is not one of the punishments handed to Renault although it is a direct result of it. However, I think the punishment is acceptable because the guys responsible for it were banned. Having a more severe punishment like suspension might force Renault to leave F1 which would be disastrous when two big manufacturers (Honda and BMW) have already left.
