If you are looking to become a professional and make a career out of racing, you should start trying to join karting clubs to gain a little experience before going onto a college. Skip Barber is a great school to get into and has a great track. If you live in the southeast region of the U.S. you may want to consider joining NASA SE (national auto sports association south east). I joined a while ago and it has been a great experience. It can be a bit pricy since the cost of a car breaking can be very expensive, but it gives you great track time experience. Membership costs around $45 for a year and track weekends usually cost around $350 (not including gas, car repairs, or room/ eating expenses). In becoming a member of NASA, you get great experience by getting real track time with a very competent instructor on courses such as Roa Atlanta, CMP (Carolina Motorsports Park), and Barber. The community of these drivers and racers can really help someone become a very competent racer and start winning some money and sponsorships.

Skip Barber Racing School is an excellent place to get started. Instructors are always available and you don't have to work on or own your own car. Whatever talent level you're at, you'll have people to race against, and you get to race at the best road courses in America. They even have several race series to compete in. You still need a decent pile of cash. A 3 day competition school goes for close to $4,000 and I think it's just a bit under $20,000 to race for a full season. Of course once you don't have to run the full season, you can just race once or twice a year.

Any race school is a good investment but to get real experience you need to be racing. Join your local Karting Club and get started. Get some full time work over the summer and a part time job once you start school so you have the money to get started. If you contact the club they can give you some idea as too how much it would cost to get going and you can always start out with used equipment to save a bit.
