The general rule of thumb in the US is that you need about $1 million of your own money to get started. Like other athletes, you'll need to learn the craft. Even if you have all the physical talents to be the next Jeff Gordon or Lewis Hamilton, the cost of developing those skills can be very expensive before you get to the point that someone would consider sponsoring you. In the early years, you'll have to win to get noticed and it takes a considerable amount of money to run front running cars even in local series. Once you move out of a local series, you'll need to get regional/national and the cars get substantially more expensive and you now have travel and team costs. When you succeed at this level, you may get noticed by a top tier team who might consider investing into your driver development. But the reality is, you'll have easily spent $1M by the time you get there.
